Reading Together at Home and School

Reading is the key to all learning and is an essential skill. At Highfield Primary School we aim to help our children to gain confidence and pleasure from reading. The children will benefit from this reading partnership between Home and School.

Reading has a very high profile at Highfield and we are fortunate to have such a large selection of books for the children to read and take home. As well as stories, children need to read information texts, poems, posters, letters, invitations, plays, newspapers etc in order to become familiar with different layouts.

Teachers monitor progress closely and make the decision when the child is ready to move to the next level. Their level of understanding is taken into account, as is their ability to read with expression.

At Key Stage 1 children are heard reading individually in school each day by teachers, nursery nurses, classroom assistants and parent helpers. In Reception this happens three times a week.

Reading to a variety of adults and taking part in a range of reading activities helps to build confidence and enjoyment.

At Key Stage 2 children read both individually and as part of a group in guided reading.
